Poster I made for Costello & The Cool Minors Record Release Show at Thunderbird Cafe. This show was awesome and fun was had by all. Way Yes (from Columbus) was also there along with Smiling (from Pittsburgh) and both of them rocked the mic.

Aftermath of an Average Miracle

The "Not So F*%@?#! Serious" group show that kicked off this past Friday (October 21st) at Unsmoke Artspace in Braddock, PA was certainly something to experience. Braddock was the appropriate setting for this eclectic and excited assemblage of artists, all working feverishly in the Pennsylvania region at one time or another. The landscape of Braddock consists of belching steel mill activity (across the street from the venue), lonely buildings and kind-hearted people.

The show was a relative success, considering the location and distance from Pittsburgh. Attracting around 100 guests throughout the evening, fun was in large supply and no bad vibes were generated or received. We'll be planning a closing reception for those that missed the opening or those that want to come back for more. Likely the closing activities will occur around the weekend of the 11th, 12th and 13th, which day exactly is undetermined at this point.

Pinball Machine Playing Field

It's been weeks in the process, but I've finally finished the playing field for the pinball machine that I'm working on. Sorry for the cell-phone quality pics. Now all that's left to do is the backglass, elevated portions of the playing field, bumpers, light inserts, skirts and side panels of the cabinet.

Polish Hill Arts Festival (part deuce)

So I finished up the poster for the Polish Hill Arts Festival a few nights ago. It's a 3-color creature and took a surprisingly long time to finish coloring. Unfortunately the art I made wasn't proportionate to a tabloid size, but I think I compensated well with the extra white space.  I plan to also screenprint a larger version, but it will likely be in just one color.

Braddock Again ~ Invasion

Hello to all. I want to post about this, but I'm not sure how much I can leak to you as it's still in it's infancy. So for now I'll be giving you the bare bones and therefore just teasing you.

Over the past 2 months I've been organizing, with Maggie Negrete and a few other folks, a group art show in Braddock, PA at the artspace Unsmoke Systems. The show is set to happen mid-October, the Opening Reception on October 21, 2011. The prospective artists have already been selected, a good handful have since agreed through informal conversations. We'll be sending out our proposal to a little over 20 Pittsburgh based artists next week. The name for the show is not yet decided, but by tomorrow it will be finally decided.

The show will be based in installation, traditional art exhibiting (framed pieces, sculptural, etc.), experiential and on-site/site specific painting or multi-media. So essentially it's a creative free-for-all of sorts. We don't have total creative freedom in this space, but the gallery owner/operator, Jeb, is an awesome dude and is allowing us a lot of flexibility. That is actually the primary reason for having it in Braddock at this particular location. The hardest part will be promoting this and convincing people to travel all the way to Braddock just for an art show. So start spreading the word now. Unfortunately that is all the information I can release at the moment. Once all of the artists have been confirmed I'll make a more complete post. Until then just wallow in your own anticipation please!

Pinball Machine Contest

A couple of weeks ago Wildcard, an awesome consignment shop here in Pittsburgh, announced a contest for a local artist to design and paint a 1970s vintage pinball machine. Brian, who co-owns and operates the shop, approached me and asked if I'd submit a design. So I said what the hell and gave it a shot.

A week or so later Brian calls me up and informs that I won and asked if I was up for the job. At first I was hesitant, not knowing anything about doing something of the sort, but I agreed of course. So now I have just about a month to make further designs, paint the different parts of the machine and finalize everything in time for the opening reception in July. I'm still very intimidated by the whole project, but I like challenges and feel confident that I can knock this thing out with a killer execution.

After the reception and show at Wildcard, where the finished machine will be on display, the game will be transported to be displayed at the World Pinball Tournament which happens to be in Pittsburgh this year. As things develop I'll post more pictures of the process and finished product. Cross your fingers folks, the clock is a-tickin'

Front and Back Cover for Issue 12

Well, everybody, we made it to the color issue finally. I mean I'm not sure that anyone was waiting for it, but here it is. I should get the copies sometime this weekend and they'll be available for purchase next week on the etsy and various local shops including: Copacetic Comics, Big Idea Bookstore, Phantom of the Attic and Awesome Books. They'll probably be around $4 or $5. Thanks to all of the peeps and fans who donated their work, time and money! You're the greatest!

I'm Bad at Blogging

This was the poster I made for "Rock Show, Dude!", art exhibit I curated at Wildcard Consignment shop, way back in January. The time falls behind me and it takes me months to pick it back up. I swear I haven't forgotten people who actually read this once in a while.

Poster for David

My friend David Pokrivnak, fantastic artist and even better musician, has been working with some other great folks to establish a small record label called Wild Kindness. He was looking around for artists to create some work for some of the bands/shows that are upcoming. I agreed of course because I truly am inspired by folks out there doing the work that they know will make them happy and satisfied. The design above was screenprinted in 3 colors for a show in May. The browns and greens came out darker than desired. Still trying to get a handle on the ins and outs of printmaking. Very delicate medium.

Jam~uary

This one I finished back in December, I think that I'll remove the type and add something else instead. Not too happy with it yet.....

This is a bird mask I made for Halloween 2010. I need to think up some good opportunities to introduce myself at social gatherings wearing this thing. Which reminds I should probably make some wings or something to accompany my ensemble.

Andromeda #7

 

Last month's issue, #6, was done up in a 2-color silkscreened cover. When shown to Ed Piskor, he remarks "You do know that you have to screenprint your covers from now on, right?" The thought had not occurred to me, but he's right. There is no turning back from this, I have to keep up this aesthetic. So for as long as I can manage Andromeda will feature a color cover. Enjoy!

PIX-Finally something really cool and rad happening here in Pittsburgh.

Hello folks, I'm here to tell you about something new and exciting that's rapidly approaching the fair city of Pittsburgh. It's PIX, Pittsburgh's first annual Independent Comics Expo presented by Copacetic Comics Company, Toonseum and sponsoring in part from The Sprout Fund. The event is to be held on October 16th and 17th, 10 am - 5pm each day on the top floor of the newly renovated Guardian Storage Facility at 2839 Liberty Avenue (in the Strip District). It's open for free to the general public and vendor/creator tables are only $25. If you'd like a table be sure to do so soon because this event is shaping up to be worthy of notation considering it is only in it's infancy. Special guests confirmed for panels and such include, but are not limited to: Kevin Huizenga, Ed Piskor, Jim Rugg, Frank Santoro, and Tom Scioli.

I will also be there dishing out issues of Andromeda including the release of #6 to the masses. Also in attendance will be Nate McDonough of GRIXLY comics and Stephanie Neary, creator of various minis and gnarly drawings abound (cross your fingers for her attendance). I hope to see all of you there. We really need your support for this one Pittsburgh, I mean why wouldn't you come, IT'S FREE!!
